Chiropractic Rx
Chiropractic’s health benefits are so much greater than the relief of back or neck pain. Chiropractic is whole-body health care with the vision to see the body as much more than the sum of its parts.
The science of chiropractic emphasizes the relationship between the spine and the nervous system, and how that relationship affects function and health. Spinal misalignments (known as vertebral subluxations) can interfere with the transmission of information from the brain, over the spinal cord and/or nerve roots to any or all systems of the body. The resulting altered information produces altered function and lowered resistance, which often results in symptoms and disease.
Doctors of chiropractic use a broad range of techniques to locate, analyze and gently correct vertebral subluxations. They do this so that the body’s communication system can work more effectively to initiate, control and coordinate the various functions of the cells, organs and systems of the body.
The chiropractic approach to health care is holistic, stressing the patient’s overall well-being. It recognizes that many factors affect health, including exercise, diet, rest, environment and heredity. Chiropractic focuses on maintaining optimal health naturally so that the body is better able to resist disease, rather than simply treating the symptoms of disease.
Chiropractors use natural, drugless, non-surgical health care and rely on the body’s inherent recuperative abilities. Their vision encompasses the entire individual in all of his or her unique complexity, and they work in partnership with their patients to ensure optimal health and wellness in all facets of their lives.

DD PALMER, 1895 – FATHER OF CHIROPRACTIC
Chiropractic: “The purpose of a Chiropractic adjustment is to unite a person’s physical body with their spiritual body.” Chiropractic focuses on the body’s inborn capacity to maintain and restore its own health. This inborn wisdom, or innate intelligence, helps the body constantly adapt to changes in its internal and external environment to help the body survive and thrive in changing conditions. The nervous system (through the brain and spinal cord) coordinates and controls the function of all of the body’s organs and systems, and even the function of its myriad cells.Misalignments in the vertebrae that make up the spinal column can interfere with the transmission of information from the brain, over the spinal cord to the spinal nerves and, ultimately, to all systems of the body. These misalignments, called vertebral subluxations, can disrupt proper nerve function and lead to decreased performance and health.Chiropractors locate, analyze and gently correct vertebral subluxations by using a broad range of adjusting techniques. By restoring proper nerve flow, the chiropractor helps people enjoy more of their full potential for health and optimal performance.Chiropractic involves the study of philosophy, science and art. Philosophy considers the fundamental nature of existence, of human beings and of their interaction with the environment. The sciences deal with human biology – especially the relationship between the spinal segments and the nerve system, and the effect this relationship has on the body’s innate striving to express and maintain its own health. Chiropractic’s art is the expression of its philosophy and is concerned with locating and correcting vertebral subluxations.Ultimately, chiropractic is concerned with improving the body’s expression of life and health.
DD PALMER HILIGHTS:
- Life is the expression of tone. In that sentence is the basic principle of Chiropractic.
- I feel it my bounden duty to not only replace displaced bones, but also teach others, so that the physical and spiritual may enjoy health, happiness and the full fruition of our earthly lives.
- The basic principle, and the principles of chiropractic which have been developed from it are not new. They are as old as the vertebrae… I am not the first person to replace subluxated vertebra, for this art has been practiced for thousands of years.
- Reverend Samuel H. Weed, at my request to selected to Greek words, ‘cheir’ and ‘praxis’, meaning when combined, “done by hand.” From which I coined the word, ‘CHIROPRACTIC’.
- I desired to know why one person was ailing and his associate, eating at the same table, working in the same shop, at the same bench was not. Why? What difference was there in these two persons that caused one to have various diseases, while his partner escaped?
- Chiropractors correct abnormalities of the intellect as well as those of the body.
- Many patients imagine that they have tried everything. True, they have used many remedies, but they have never had the cause of their infirmity and adjusted.
- That which I named ‘innate’ is a segment of that intelligence which fills the universe.
- Life is but the expression of spirit through matter. To make life manifest requires the union of spirit and body.
- Innate is a segment of the All-Wise; Educated is an offspring of innate, a servant for its lifetime only. Educated continues with and lasts as long as life exists; Innate is eternal, always was and always will be.
- Disease is a disturbed condition, not a thing or entity.
- Disease is the abnormal performance of certain functions; the abnormal activity has its causes.
- To be specific, is to exhibit a knowledge of the principles and art of adjusting; a comprehension of facts so systematized and that they are available for the relief of disease.
- The philosophy of chiropractic is founded upon the knowledge of the manner in which a vital functions are performed by innate in health and disease. When the controlling intelligence is able to transmit mental impulses to all parts of the body, free and unobstructed, we have normal action which is health.
- Innate directs its vital energy through the nervous system to specialize the coordination and sensation and volition through the cumulative and vegetative functions.
- Displacement of any part of the skeletal frame may press against nerves, which are the channels of communication, intensifying or decreasing their carrying capacity, creating either too much or not enough functionating, an aberration known as disease. The nature of the affection depends upon the shape of the bone, the amount of pressure, age of patient, character of nerves impinged upon and the individual makeup.
- Pressure on nerves causes irriatation and tension with deranged functions as a result. Why not release the pressure? Why not a just cause instead of treating effects? Why not?
- Do not forget that chiropractors did not treat diseases they adjust causes, whether acquired, spontaneous, or the result of accident.
- Drugs are delusive; they do not adjust anything.
- Compulsory vaccination is an outrage and a gross interference with the liberty of the people in a land of freedom
- Chiropractic is a science just so far as it is specific.
- The only failure one man should fear, is the failure to do his best.
- There is a vast difference between treating effects and adjusting the cause.
- Chiropractic is founded upon different principles than those of medicine.
- I laid the foundation and built a thereon, the science of CHIROPRACTIC.

VITAL MIND HEART & BODY
“What is it then, that makes us say we are tired? Only one thing, an unbalanced body, nothing more. If we think we are ill, it is only because we have done something to unbalance the bodily conductivity of the universal electric current, which motivates it. So long as any machine, organic or inorganic, holds to the balanced tempo of its own normalcy of measured rhythm, just so long as it obeys the periodic law which it a normalcy of work and rest in the inorganic machine, or wakefulness and sleep in the organic one, and just so long as it obeys and just so long as it replaces its worn-out organic and inorganic parts, that machine is a certain to go through its normal balanced life period without fatigue or illness as the sun is sure to reappear on the morrow.”

Chiropractors: Beyond the spine
Can adjustments affect the whole body?
Chiropractors are best known for treating back and neck pain. But can their hands-on manipulations of the spine also help with colic, asthma, ear infections, allergies and digestive issues?
Though it’s a controversial notion, some chiropractors are aggressively marketing themselves as holistic, primary-care healers who can treat a broad scope of ailments ranging from acid reflux to infertility. Others in the field say chiropractors should focus on musculoskeletal disorders such as back pain, where evidence for efficacy is the strongest.
The internal philosophical divide has given the profession a confusing image, making it difficult for consumers to know when, if ever, they should visit a chiropractor.
“We often hear from chiropractors that ‘chiropractic is more than just back pain.’ But is it?” Rhode Island chiropractor Donald Murphy asked in a commentary published last year in the journal Chiropractic and Osteopathy. “And more importantly, does it have to be?”
Though conventional practitioners have often scorned them for making unfounded claims, chiropractors are now established as mainstream health-care providers. Many health plans and Medicaid now cover their services, and they regularly care for clients ranging from the chronically ill to professional and Olympic athletes. An estimated 8.6 percent of adults in the U.S. use chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.
Chiropractors typically apply a sudden force to a region of the spine to help loosen a stiff joint, which they say allows the body’s natural healing process to take over. During an initial visit, the chiropractor typically takes a health history and performs a physical exam, focusing on the spine. X-rays may be taken, and spinal “adjustments” may be applied with a patient lying face-down or sideways on a table.
Experts say there is evidence the treatments can lessen lower back pain, even if researchers have yet to figure out exactly why.
A non-drug, non-surgical approach, the manual treatments can be “a good adjunct to musculoskeletal care,” said Dr. Joel Press, medical director of the Spine and Sports Rehabilitation Center at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, which employs two chiropractors.
At Chiro One Wellness Centers, however, spinal adjustments are used to treat a wide variety of ailments seemingly unrelated to the spine. Moreover, anyone is encouraged to come in for regular maintenance to prevent disease from occurring.
“We call it spinal hygiene,” said chiropractic physician Ashlin Gasiorowski, clinic director of the Chiro One center in Evanston, one of 38 locations in Illinois and Kentucky.
As many as 180 people a day visit his strip mall-based clinic for quick adjustments. “A lot of our patients are here for wellness.”
The Chiro One philosophy stems from a concept of chiropractic manipulation from the late 1800s that many view as unscientific and outdated. The theory holds that the spine is the key to our overall health and that human illnesses arise from “subluxation,” a term chiropractors use for misalignment of the spine. That distortion allegedly interferes with the ability of the brain to control the body.
“The premise was and still is that the spine and the nervous system are the master systems which control and coordinate all function in the body,” said Chiro One Chief Executive Stuart Bernsen. “If there is interference in the communication between the brain and the spinal cord to their end organs or tissues, then those end organs or tissues cannot function properly.”
The subluxations can be caused by physical issues such as falling or repetitive movements, as well as mental and emotional stress, Bernsen said. They “affect the health of your nerves, ligaments, discs and joints, weaken your muscle and alter the energy that flows from your brain and nerves to all parts of your body,” the Chiro One promotional literature warns. “Your internal organs may get less blood, even your brain may get less oxygen!”
Chiropractors can help, according to the subluxation theory, by removing the pressure.
Ultimately, Bernsen wants Chiro One to be the dominant provider of chiropractic care so it can “define for the public what [chiropractic medicine] is, how to use it and how to benefit,” he said.
“Chiropractic is very ill-defined,” Bernsen said. “You can go to five chiropractors and have five different experiences. We want to shift the paradigm of how consumers use a chiropractor.”
But only a minority of chiropractors still adhere to the original theories of the spine as a source of ill health. On the other end of the spectrum are chiropractors who use a more modern, evidence-based approach that focuses on the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions using a variety of techniques, with the exception of prescription drugs and surgery.

21ST CENTURY HAS ARRIVED FOR SOME…
A medical doctor’s view of chiropractic care
A: Traditional chiropractic theory posits that by correcting spinal abnormalities (subluxations) a chiropractor can effect all organs of the body. It is a good theory and there is some experimental work in animals that tends to support the premise. But, there is little evidence in the literature that chiropractic is effective for problems other than musculoskeletal conditions.
Q: How does chiropractic care work?
A: Good question but not a straightforward answer. Why does any form of treatment work?
Q: What are the main criticisms of chiropractic care?
A: The chiropractic profession has taken a lot of criticism during its existence. The criticisms it faces today are often generalizations that are not necessarily based in reality. Some of the common criticisms are:
Chiropractors have an inferior education: Chiropractic has a highly developed educational system that is regulated and standardized to a great degree. Although some portions of a curriculum may lack rigor, most are of good quality. The weakest part of chiropractic education is the clinical post-doctoral period…there is no requirement for an internship or residency prior to licensure as there is in medicine and osteopathy.
Chiropractic does a poor job of self policing: Although state boards regulate chiropractic practice in all 50 states, most chiropractors have a solo practice. This lack of “rubbing shoulders” with colleagues provides little incentive for practitioners with a typical behavior to change.
Chiropractors just want you to keep coming back: There is some truth to this. The chiropractic practice model suggests that multiple treatments over a period of weeks to months is necessary to get a maximal benefit. But this is not unlike physical therapy, acupuncture or massage practice. Although some chiropractors let their business model dictate treatment more than clinical evidence, most limit treatment to what is needed for each individual patient based on their response to care.
Q: How can consumers be sure they find a good chiropractor and what conditions should they consider seeing one for?
A: Chiropractors do a reasonably good job of treating back and neck pain and there is limited evidence that some lumbar radiculopathies (or sciatica) may benefit from their treatment. A good chiropractor will explain why treatment is indicated, and suggest a trial period of treatment (for example 6 to 8 visits) to determine if it is going to help. I suggest that patients beware of chiropractors who suggest initial treatment of more than 3 to 4 weeks duration, lump sum payment, or treatment for a condition that is not related to the spine or other common joints/muscle conditions.
Q: How solid is the evidence behind the efficacy of chiropractic care? Does human touch have a role, even without adjustments?
A: The evidence supporting spinal manipulation for back pain (regardless of who renders it)is very good. The evidence in neck pain is good but less convincing. You must realize that the treatment effect for all types of treatment for back pain is relatively small. Chiropractic treatment of back pain with spinal manipulation has just as much evidence supporting it as any medical treatment for back pain.
Human touch plays a role in all health care encounters where it occurs. These “non-specific” effects are hard to measure in clinical studies.
Q: How did MD’s view chiros five years ago and has that changed? If so, how?
A: I think the medical view of chiropractic is slowly changing. The biggest impediment to change is the lack of interaction between the professions. Medical doctors who refer to chiropractors do so usually because they know the chiropractor personally and trust them to take good care of their patients, not because they have a chiropractic degree.
As both a chiropractor and medical doctor, Dr. Ralph Gay has an unusual perspective on the legendary rift between the two professions. He took some time out of his busy schedule as the director of the Spine Biomechanics Research Group at the Mayo Clinic to shed some light on what chiropractors can do for back pain and to address some common misconceptions for my story, “Chiropractors: Beyond the spine.”
Q: Chiros are best known for treating back and neck pain, but some say they can treat all disorders, since “the spine and nerve system is the master system, controlling everything in the body.” Please talk a little about whether you think chiropractors can and should be treating conditions such as ear infections, asthma, insomnia and cancer.
