More and more research is demonstrating the effectiveness of spinal adjustments for the treatment of a variety of health problems. Spinal manipulation is becoming more popular and is beginning to be practiced by professionals other than chiropractors. While other practitioners may take a seminar or add manipulation as an adjunct, chiropractors have been doing spinal adjusting for over a century and are extensively trained in it.
Chiropractors spend far more classroom time learning adjustmnet (aka - Manipulation) than any other profession. The osteopathic profession has a history of performing spinal manipulation, but as a profession, they have gotten away from it. Most osteopathic schools now only offer instruction is spinal manipulation as an elective. Medical doctors do not recieve training in spinal manipulation. Of 10 physical therapy schools surveyed, none taught spinal manipulation.
Chiropractors on the other hand have an average of over 500 hours in spinal analysis and adjusting (spinal manipulation) techniques. In addition, they receive two years of hands-on clinical experience that is focused on manual manipulation (also called “adjusting”) as the main treatment procedure. In chiropractic colleges, all students are required to pass a practical examination on their adjusting (manipulation) skills and a clinical competency exam before entering their internship.
Not only is chiropractic adjusting safe, it saves money and it gets patients back on their feet much more quickly than other forms of care. Chiropractic adjustments are cheaper per-visit than visits to other professional who provide musculoskeletal care. Chiropractic can further reduce health care costs because patients receiving chiropractic care take fewer prescription drugs and undergo fewer expensive diagnostic tests.
The Chiropractor/Primary (in general) is not to blame afterall…

“All state licensing authorities within the United States recognize chiropractic as a primary health care profession distinct from medicine. In 1998, the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that 42.1 percent of the U.S. population had sought some form of non-traditional medical care, most commonly chiropractic. Those visits surpassed the number of visits to traditional medical physicians.”
“As of the fall term 2005, there are more than 10,000 students in chiropractic colleges in the United States. The curriculum of a student in chiropractic college is equivalent to that of a student of medicine, except chiropractic requires more hours of x-ray and diagnosis. Those chiropractic colleges are accredited by the same agency as the schools of medicine—the U.S. Department of Education. “
“In addition, chiropractic students must pass exams produced by an independent licensing agency prior to receiving a license to practice. The NBCE produces examinations used to satisfy certification and licensure requirements in all 50 states. Students of chiropractic must pass practical exams that demonstrate their readiness to practice. The NBCE Part IV Practical Exam is required or accepted by 47 states.”
“The NBCE Board of Directors also points out the harmful effects that passage of the bill could have on the economy. If passed, S.1955 would cause a decline in numbers of patients seeking chiropractic. Those patients would then be forced to increase their usage of pharmaceuticals to alleviate symptoms that chiropractors could have eliminated without drugs. The loss in business caused by S.1955 could create vast numbers of chiropractors unable to repay their student loans.”
Headquartered in Greeley, Colo., the NBCE is the international testing organization for the chiropractic profession. Established in 1963, the NBCE develops, administers and scores standardized examinations for candidates seeking chiropractic licensure throughout the United States and in several foreign countries.
In 1906, the Osteopaths claimed that the chiropractors were doing the same thing they were doing and they took the chiropractors to court. After detailing the “spinal adjustment” and how it’s delivered, as well as what body system the chiropractors were looking to affect, the case came down to 2 principle topics:
1) Chiropractors ADJUST specific spinal vertebrae, where the osteopaths MANIPULATED regions of the spine, and
2) Chiropractors were affecting the NERVOUS system, whereas the Osteopaths were looking to affect change thru the CIRCULATORY system.
The case was thrown out of court.
Years later, chiropractors were again under attack, and at times spent time in jail after being told that they were practicing medicine without licenses. But they persisted in treating the population and also survived this attempt at abolishing the profession.
In 1964, the AMA – realizing that they were losing money on treatments that were not involving drugs or surgery – formed a “Committee on Quackery”. This was designed to abolish ALL non-allopathic forms of healthcare, including Chiropractic, Acupuncture and Massage Therapy. They were taken to court for this action, and after 24 years of this in 1987, the AMA was handed one of the most significant defeats in American history for trying to create a monopoly as well as violating the Sherman Anti-Trust Act – which deals with the professional referral and treatment of patients between different disciplines. Prior to this, MD’s were told and being taught NOT to refer to Chiropractors.
The chiropractic profession continues to flourish to this day. It is currently the leading non-allopathic form of healthcare in the world. It’s approach is to treat the spine as the cause and source of problems, considering that ALL nerve function traveling from the brain to the rest of the body HAS TO travel thru the spinal column. If the spinal column has an abberrant curve, misaligned(subluxated) vertebrae, or other structural anomalies, the nervous system becomes compromised and therefore all it’s messages will not be received properly. An example of this would to interfere with a phone line – if there’s static in the line, the other person will not hear all your messages
The art of delivering an adjustment has come a long way since 1921. The adjustment techniques have been so refined that relaxed comfort is often experienced. Research studies continue to show it’s effectiveness, as well as different clinical applications all designed to improve function and remove subluxations that occur to the human spine.
